Northumberland Coast Rail Proposals as of December 2025

Below is a brief list of proposals for the rail network on the Northumberland Coast (Berwick Upon Tweed to Newcastle) as of 31st December 2025.

Rail Services on existing lines (Not in any defined order)

  1. Improved semi-fast service calls at Morpeth, Alnmouth (for Alnwick), and Berwick Upon Tweed for Newcastle – Edinburgh trains.
  2. Northumberland Coast Loop rail service (Newcastle – Bedlington – Berwick – Edinburgh).
  3. Newcastle – Morpeth – Bedlington Rail Service
  4. More services to smaller, less used stations such as Cramlington, Chathill, Acklington, Widdrington, and Pegswood)
  5. Electric local trains between Newcastle Upon Tyne and Berwick Upon Tweed.

Station reopenings (Not in any defined order of opening/re-opening, listed broadly north to south)

  1. Beal (for Lindisfarne)
  2. Belford (for Bamburgh)
  3. Choppington
  4. Seghill
  5. Killingworth

New rail routes

  1. Newbiggin by the Sea (extension of the Northumberland Line from Ashington), with intermediate station at Woodhorn potentially.
  2. Extension of the Aln Valley Railway towards Alnmouth (heritage railway).
  3. Butterwell Line from Ashington towards Widdrington (new sections of alignment required)
  4. Blyth Town Centre to Airport (Tyne and Wear Metro), reopened section of line into Blyth proposed)
